1839: Thoreau's name is added to the Concord tax rolls. 1840: Thoreau's name is added to the First Parish Church tax rolls; Thoreau is assessed the church tax, refuses to pay it, is threatened with jail; someone else pays the tax; Thoreau requests that his name be removed from the church tax rolls, and his request is granted. 1842: Thoreau stops paying the poll tax. 1846: July 24th or 25th, Sam Staples arrests Thoreau and puts him in jail; someone, probably Maria Thoreau, pays the tax and Thoreau is released the next day.
