You wish to plot the data value 168 in a stem-and-leaf plot. What is the stem of 168? A. 1 B. 8 C. 16 D. 68

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think its 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What did you get as your answer Katie?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the leaves are ALWAYS 1 digit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it was 8

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so for instance, if you had the data values 12, 24, 36,58, 99, 105, 127, 125 then your stem and leaf plot would look like this 1 | 2 2 | 4 3 | 6 4 | 5 | 8 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 9 10 | 5 11 | 12 | 57

My bad, sorry. If Jim is still typing, listen to what he has to say. He is EXTREMELY good at step-by-step stuff, and this I have a feeling he can describe and help you a lot with :).

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

basically you set up the stems first, a column stretching from 1 to 12 that represent the digits on the data values that aren't the units digit. Then you fill in the table by adding the leaves. So for the stem of 3, you add on 6 because we have the number 36 for instance. On the stem 12 we add on 57 because we have 125 and 127, etc
