Actually, the answer for 2 is the whole prepositional phrase of "to the shopping mall." It's odd that they don't give you that option. Also, the answer to 3 is exit, road for the following reason. Direct objects basically tell who, what, where, and why. So, in the third sentence, "We took the first exit and the back road." What did they take? They took the exit and the road. It would not be road and back because back is an adjective for road. So, 1. no direct object 2. to the shopping mall 3. exit, road
