what are negitive exponents? i dont understand at all.

OpenStudy (ranga):

Negative exponent is just the reciprocal of positive exponent: \[\Large a ^{-m} = \frac{ 1 }{ a ^{m} }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean how do you do them?

OpenStudy (ranga):

\[\Large 5^{-3} = \frac{ 1 }{ 5^{3} } = \frac{ 1 }{ 125 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a negative exponent is a exponent with a sign that look like this (-). It is on the left side of the timeline.

OpenStudy (ranga):

For example: \[\Large \frac{ 1 }{ 64 } = \frac{ 1 }{ 8 \times 8 } = \frac{ 1 }{ 8^{2} } = 8^{-2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand what your doing

OpenStudy (ranga):

Take for example, \[\Large x ^{8}\]. The number 8 here is called the exponent. It is positive. If you take the example, \[\Large x ^{-5}\] here the exponent is -5. It is negative and so it is a negative exponent. The examples I have shown you before is how to convert a negative exponent to a positive exponent or a positive exponent to a neagative exponent
