If the square root of x = -7 , then x = -49 true or false??
Please help!!
i think False
Welcome to Openstudy.
@heatherk have you ever learned about imaginary numbers?
It is false. A number can have positive and negative square roots but we cannot take the square root of a negative number simply. At higher studies, it involves complex numbers. For e.g. √49 = +7 and -7 But while taking the square root of a negative number it involves 'i' For e.g. √-49 = +7i and -7i So, x is 49 and the statement is false. Hope you understand it, because it requires higher level. But if you haven't studied complex numbers yet, you can just simply understand up to your level that the square root of a negative number is not possible. At higher level, you will learn that it is possible.
@heatherk, @Studygirl97, I see you did study trig, but there is really no solution that's why it is false. a square root of a number can't be equal to -7. it could be 7i, but not -7. Do you see what I am trying to explain. Square root of a number can never be equal to -7, |dw:1382728239390:dw| also sqrt of -49 is 7i as you said, not -7.
