PLEASE HELP! The odds against getting a job is 21 to 4. What is the odds of getting the job?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

when we say "The odds against getting a job is 21 to 4", we really mean "there are 25 outcomes: 21 of those outcomes are where you do NOT get the job, 4 of those outcomes is where you do get the job" Note: I got 25 from the fact that 21+4 = 25

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so because there are 4 outcomes where you get the job, out of 25 total, this means the answer as a fraction is 4/25

And if I had to write it as a colon again the odds against would be 4:25?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the odds against would be 21:4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops I meant the odds of getting the job would be 4:25

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you have to write it as a fraction if you use 25, so it would be 4/25

Oh okay, thank you!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
