My answer is D right?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
sort the data first
what do you get when you do that?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so do i order them up from least to greatest?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yes

okay i get 60
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
what's your sorted data set look like
OpenStudy (anonymous):
100, 95,90,80,60,50,45,35,25
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
sort it the other way around
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
smallest to largest

25,35,45,50,60,80,90,95,100
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
good, what you do now is located the median
that's the middle most value
that is 60, so the median is 60
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
then what you do is break the data set into two halves
each half has the median in it
so you'll have this lower half
25,35,45,50,60
because it's below the median, and this upper half
60,80,90,95,100
since that's above the median
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
the median of the lower half is Q1
the median of the upper half is Q3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so the small numbers are always on top right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
what do you mean
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so when you break them into two parts, is it always the first half thats on top?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
the first half is the lower half (since it's below the median)
the second half is the upper half (since it's above the median)
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
not sure what you mean by "on top"
OpenStudy (anonymous):
oh nvm lol brain fart, so now how do we find our answer?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
find the median of the upper half
that will get you Q3
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
Q3 = 3rd quartile
OpenStudy (anonymous):
90
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you got it
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yay!! does upper extreme mean upper half?

hmm I've never heard of that term, but it sounds like it
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
it could also be referring to the max
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
upper extreme = max
but not sure
OpenStudy (anonymous):
okay cuz this is what I came across.
Identify the upper extreme on the box-and-whisker plot.

A. -5
B. -3.5
C. 1
D. 5
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yeah i think they want you to find the max
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
ie, the right most point on the plot
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so the total max would be 5 then right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
or i mean 1 lol
