help. y= x^2 - 5.. why was it consider as a function?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

It's a function because for every x value you plug in, you only get one y-value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks! how about is y= x^2 + 2x - 5 a function or a mere relation? why?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Anytime you have y = something involving x, it's a good bet it's a function. Unless it has a plus or minus sign somwhere, like this \[\large y = \pm x\]

aah. okay okay!! got it now.. thanks!! thanks!! :)
