Word problem help please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so I know I need to find the vertex and solve for y=a(x-h)^2+k V=(4.5,3) I think? and I know the frog started at ground 0 so I can use point (0,0) 0=a(0-4.5)^2+3 Please let me know if I am on the right path. Another thing throwing me off is it says a=1.5 Do I multiple that by what I solve a for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have the vertex?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The \(x\) coordinate will be half way between 0 and 9.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The \(y\) coordinate is 3 times a.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct so 4.5, and how I find the y value of the vertex? I need it to find a correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok what is the equation you gave p(x) never seen or maybe its just alot together

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I understand that. I am just unsure where some of the number come from like 1(x-4.5)^2+3a comes from

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then why we set it equal to (x-4.5)^2+4.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my bad. ignore what i wrote

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so how would you solve for a without y coordinate of vertex

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok wait a=1.5 so it would be 3(1.5) so the vertex would be (4.5,4.5) right?

OpenStudy (ranga):

Yes you have the correct vertex at (4.5, 4.5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so know I solve it like 0=a(0-4.5)^2+4.5? Which gives me a allowing me to get standard form?

OpenStudy (ranga):

You will get the "a" from that. Then put the parabolic equation in the standard form.

OpenStudy (ranga):

You can factor out 4.5 from 0=a(0-4.5)^2+4.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what would be my answer for a because I keep getting wacky fractions

OpenStudy (ranga):

a = -1/4.5 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (ranga):

or a = -2/9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first

OpenStudy (ranga):

they are the same but I prefer a = -2/9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so y=-2/9(x-4.5)^2+4.5

OpenStudy (ranga):

Yes. But you need to expand (x - 4.5)^2 and simplify y. Also 4.5 can be written as 9/2. But it is up to you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok Thanks. While I have you here I have almost all the answers to another problem included here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now I know you distribute. x(800-3x)/4. Now I know 200x the part that confuses me is the second part is it -3x^2/4 and if so how do I get it into -(b/2(a))

OpenStudy (ranga):

-3/4x^2 + 200x Compare it to ax^2 + bx + c a = ? b = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok yeah I did that and got 133.3 for X but when I typed it in the answer it was wrong

OpenStudy (ranga):

Did you find y and type that in too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, but the way the program works is you can type in one answer at a time and check it. So it still says X is wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

an I wanna make sure X is right before I plug it into -3/4x^2+200x

OpenStudy (ranga):

Try x = 400/3 and see if the answer is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sadly that worked...which is dumb because all the other problem required dec thank you so much

OpenStudy (ranga):

yeah, these online things are sometimes frustrating. If they don't explicitly tell you whether they want decimal or fraction it should accept either answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where would I plug in 400/3 to find Y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought back in the standard vertex formula but get some high wacky fraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nvm i found it, it would be the y(x) function.

OpenStudy (ranga):

Yes, plug x = 400/3 into y = -2/9(x-4.5)^2+4.5
