Can someone tell me how to solve this? Use the Substitution Method to solve the following system of equations. 4x + y = 11 x + 2y = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well if you rearrange the first equation for 'y' you find that y=11-4x then if you substitute this value of 'y' into the second equation, you'll get just numbers and x's then you just equate them to find the value of 'x'. then substitute your value of 'x' back into the first equation to find a value for y.

so you'll get x+2(11-4x)=8

Thanks for the formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem! do you understand where i got it from, and how to expand it and solve?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I learned it in my lesson and i get how it solves the problem.

great!
