OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do I find the derivative of the rational function y=x/(√1+x^2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use the quotient rule

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know how to use the quotient rule. I just dont know how to simplify it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok what have u got so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

((√1+x^2) - (x/(2√1+x^2)))/(1+x^2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I simplified the bottom from (√1+x^2)^2 to just 1+x^2. was I right to do that? It makes sense but does it just complicate the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes the denominator = 1 + x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the way you've written is confusing though i think the denominator should be written √(1 + x^2)
