The following text was written by a medieval Christian, St. Denis, about the Battle of Tours in 732 CE, at which the Frankish leader Charles Martel drove back Muslim invaders from Spain. Use the excerpt to answer the following question: The Muslims planned to go to Tours to destroy the Church of St. Martin, the city, and the whole country. Then came against them the glorious Prince Charles, at the head of his whole force. He drew up his host, and he fought as fiercely as the hungry wolf falls upon the stag. By the grace of Our Lord, he wrought a great slaughter upon the enemies

of Christian faith, so that-as history bears witness-he slew in that battle 300,000 men, likewise their king by name Abderrahman. Then was he [Charles] first called "Martel," for as a hammer of iron, of steel, and of every other metal, even so he dashed: and smote in the battle all his enemies. And what was the greatest marvel of all, he only lost in that battle 1500 men. -Public Domain Which of the following provides evidence that this primary source might contain bias? (5 points) St. Denis uses emotionally loaded language. St. Denis refers to religious matters in his text. St. Denis did not personally witness the battle. St. Denis gives round numbers for battle deaths. @Kfins99

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is either A or C, but I would go with C) St. Denis did not have personally witness the battle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thanks! @jcari , would you agree? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B or C ahh I don't know D: I was thinking B because St Denis was a Christian and he was talking about how Prince Charles (also Christian) defeated the muslims that were planning on destroying the church. I'm not sure though, what do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol a bunch of answers to choose from.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would have thought B, too. Because bias is more towards one thing. So like he was biased to Christianity. As far as witnessing the battle, wouldn't that just provide proof that he can't really say because he didn't see it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like would that be considered a true form of bias?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I think he was biased to Christianity. Wonder what the answer is.. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well... Shoot... Lets all look it up and pick that answer, and then Lover can pick the best

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@LoverofWords You're right, we could cancel out the other options because they're not really forms of bias. They're more like facts, religion would be something someone might be biased about, B would probably be right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right, that was what I kind of thought. The only thing that's throwing me off is that he would have had to use some religious speech because the battle was over religion. That's the only thing that is throwing me off.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@LoverofWords Did you get it right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I'm just picking the religion one. It seems like the most true sense of the word bias.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good idea!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, I haven't submitted it yet. Sorry lol I just realized what you're asking.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Bwahahaha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@LoverofWords what the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sunnycali I don't remember the answer, but I think it may have been the emotionally loaded language one. i'm definitely not 100% sure, though.
