I need help creating an outline for my History paper. I haven't written a paper in a very long time, and do not know how to separate the information in to topics, subtopics and points? My outline is due tonight.
My paper is on the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears.
lol this link look like for kids only but this paragraph temple will help you out. http://traveltripreportnathan.blogspot.com/2011/06/paragraphs.html
In 1830 Congress, urged on by President Andrew Jackson, passed the Indian Removal Act which gave the federal government the power to relocate any Native Americans in the east to territory that was west of the Mississippi River. Though the Native Americans were to be compensated, this was not always done fairly and in some cases led to the further destruction of many of the already diminishing numbers of many of the eastern tribes. The Cherokee Nation was allocated land in Georgia as a result of the 1791 treaty with the U.S. Government. In 1828, not only did whites for settlement purposes desire their land, but gold was discovered. Georgia tried to reclaim this land in 1830, but the Cherokee protested and took the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Court decided in favor of the Cherokee, however, the President and Congress forced the Native Americans to give up their land. 1838 called in federal troops in to “escort” approximately 15,000 Cherokee people to their new home in Indian Territory. On the way, approx. 1/3 of the Cherokee people died. This event, known to the Cherokee as “The Trail Where They Cried”, is better known as the Trail of Tears in U.S. History textbooks. Hopefully, you can gain some information from the text to help start your paper, if you ever need a paper proofread, feel free to ask. :)
Thank you Jake! I am trying to narrow down the topics and subtopics for my outline. It is for a 10-15 page research paper. I am having a hard time discerning what pertinent information I should include, and what information not to include.
Remember to start with a strong thesis statement and introduction, throughout the paper use key information. (Important dates, significant situations, etc.), It would be best to not include information that has been clearly stated. What I mean is do not drag information on in order to fill space.
Well a quick breakdown of what I am covering is: settlers relationship with Native Americans, Indian Removal Act (Andrew Jackson, Assimilation...), Results of Indian Removal Act (Tribes, Removal -conditions/deaths, destination)...any other suggestions?
I am going at this in a chronological order, and it is an explanatory essay.
What class is this for if you do not mind me asking?
History 8, US History through Reconstruction
I am a returning student after 10 year hiatus. Unfortunately I was not smart enough to take an English class first. :(
My best suggestion would be to break down your information that you have acquired, when done with that place it in order, then after that, proceed to categorize the different sections you will be speaking about. For example; The Indian Removal Act: - Supporting detail - Supporting Detail. etc. Make sure to use as much information as possible. :)
