Leaders: - First mover advantage allows one to capture the market share and sets him on a path towards a possible monopoly. This advantage may stem from the fact that the first entrant can gain control of resources that followers may not be able to match, possibly due to reasons such as high levels of internal economies of scale. In their article, Kerin et al (1992) mentioned that numerous studies advance the notion that first movers achieve a long-term competitive edge over others in the industry. This can be illustrated by firms such as Merill Lynch, the first movers or leaders into the market, are commonly believed to accrue long-term competitive head start over rivals. The order of entry into the market (the earlier the better), and market share and hence market power are believed to be casually related, as mentioned by Urban and Star (1991). This implies the very fact that the leaders in the market (i.e. the first-movers) have a higher probability of success in their business venture as compared to other firms.
