Which of these metals react with acid: Gold, Zinc and Copper. Also what would their word equation be: Gold + Acid = ? Zinc + Acid = ? Copper + Acid = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I know zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid in the equation: \[Zn+2HCl===>ZnCl _{2}+H_{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Gold doesn't chemically react with acid but it does dissolve in it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Copper does react with sulphuric acid in the equation:\[Cu+H _{2}SO4===>Cu ^{2+}+SO _{4} ^{2-} +H _{2}\] It produces one copper with 2 extra electrons so i wrote 2- up there and one SO4 with 2 extra electrons so i wrot (2-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh and i almost forgot one molecule of diatomic hydrogen

OpenStudy (aaronq):

gold actually doesn't dissolve in anything BUT aqua regia \((HNO_3 \;\&\;H_2SO_4)\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yah but thats an acid right? @aaronq

OpenStudy (aaronq):

damn i meant HCl and HNO3 but yeah, they're acids, but i'm don't think the mean specifically aqua regia

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (aaronq):

don't be all butthurt i didn't say you were wrong
