Check my answer? (Trigonometry)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (amistre64):

sin was correct ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sin 70 = 140 / x 2.7474 = 140 / x x = 51 ft.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

x = 140/sin(70) ....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@amistre64 @duality Thank you

OpenStudy (amistre64):

make sure your mode is on degrees, or convert them

OpenStudy (amistre64):

sin(70deg) not= sin(70rads)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

and, since sin is a value from -1 to 1, it cant rightly be 2 point something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@amistre64 It is, thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

: ))

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lol, mine was in radian mode

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the distance from the boat to the top of the lighthouse cant be less than the height of the lighthouse .... so 51 seems a little off to me

OpenStudy (amistre64):

|dw:1383242820983:dw|

OpenStudy (amistre64):

51 is about the distance the boat is from the base of the lighthouse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes @amistre64 is right, so sorry i just look at the approach, sin values are between -1 and one therfore 2.74 is on a different scale sorry @jcari

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@duality @amistre64 lol that's okay, I got it now : ) I have one more to show

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It says from point A, he walked downstream 60 feet to point B, so in place of x, wouldn't that be 60 ft? I did cos 44 = 60 / x .7193 = 60 / x x = 83.41 Do you know what I did wrong?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the lengths involved are side and side ... tangent plays with sides

OpenStudy (amistre64):

tan = w/x

OpenStudy (amistre64):

therefore w = 60 tan(44)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh I just realized I did cos instead of tan! Okay, I worked it out and got 57.936 which rounds to 58 and that's one of the answers :D

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yep, also 44 is almost 45; at 45 it would have been 60, so a little less then 60 is 58

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you! @amistre64

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome
