A car manufacturer produced a car at a cost of "d" dollars and sold it to a dealer at a price 20% higher than the production cost. If the dealer sold the car to a consumer for 15% more than the dealer paid for it, what did the car cost the consumer in dollars?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.35d

OpenStudy (dan815):

nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.37d?

OpenStudy (dan815):

the price d was first increased by 20% of its price so 1.2 * 1d = 1.2d so 1.2d is current price now you want to increase 1.2d by 15% so that is 1.15*1.2d

OpenStudy (dan815):

you need to understand the question dont worry about the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First, find the price that the car sold to dealer. 20% higher than d means d+20%. So what is the price that 15% higher than d+20%d?

OpenStudy (dan815):

what does it mean to raise a price by 20% and then raise that price by 15%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add .20

OpenStudy (dan815):

okay i will delete my comments you need to really understand this

OpenStudy (dan815):

chinese boy will guide you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you, dan815.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d + .20 d + .20 + .15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The right answer I think is 138%d. Why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will tell you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes , that's the correct answer but how did you get 138d instead of 135d? why did you add the 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

As I have just said, "20% higher than d" means d+20%d. So can you tell me "15% higher than x" means what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.15x + X

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now consider d+20%x as a whole number, in stead x. What would you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've got: (d+ .20) + .15 = 1.35d but you are right with 1.38d and I don't understand where the 3 comes from.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

All right. Let me do for you. Please look carefully. (I got a mistake on last reply, sorry). d+20%d+15%(d+20%d) d+20%d+15%d+15%*20%d Now can you get the right answer? Pay attention to 15%*20%d

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I see the 15 and 20 percents but WHY would you add them twice? Is it because of the process the car went through three time to get the final charge?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANK YOU....OOOOO kayyyyy.. I think I've got it! I see the 3 d's which makes it 1.38d instead of 1.35d. I set it up like this : production cost: d dealer purchas: d + .20d consumer cost: (d + .20d) + .15d = 1.38d

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, you got it! Excellent!
