I'm a half liar - they actually generally start by placing a dot on the right instead of the top. Sorry :( Same clockwise though.

I technically doesn't make a difference because you're still showing which valence electrons are paired and which aren't, which is a main reason to use them. Their configuration around the letter is in no way tied to their arrangement in the outer shell, so I think it'll be fine. Sorry though; should have checked my conventions better :(
