explain what is wrong with the following statement and write a new, correct statement. "when equilibrium is reached ,particles stop moving back and forth throught the cell membrane."

OpenStudy (jfraser):

equilibrium isn't an "end" to achieve, it's a state of dynamic balance. When equilibrium is achieved, reactions don't stop, but you have 2 reactions occurring in opposite directions at the same rate. If one ion moves out of the cell at one time, somewhere else in the cell another ion must be moving in. That makes the concentration of ions inside and outside the cell stay the same, but not because the ions "stop" moving
