In a synthesis reaction, how does 2Na + Cl2 = 2NaCl. Why isn't the answer 2NaCl2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Na has a charge of +1 hence the ratio of reaction with a chloride ion which also has a charge of -1 hence there is no need to put a 2 as a subscript. Essentially it is Na1Cl1

plus the equation is not balanced in your case.

OpenStudy (gtxmuqsit):

if it's 2NaCl2 equation would not be balanced.
