What parts of a tragedy does Aristotle say are necessary ingredients?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ehuman Are you taking or do you plan on taking Literature?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry Donald. I'm taking college English but literature is not my forte. This link may be of help to you though. http://cuip.uchicago.edu/~ldernbach/msw/xhgkaristrag.pdf

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, I'm not looking for anything online. I can do that on my own. I was hoping for someone to discuss study-related issues with.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's why I'm here on "Open Study". I want to study things openly with other people.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, far, not much luck.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I had already looked the answer up before I asked the question. BUT really digging into what Aristotle means by his statement is a bit of a challenge. Definition of Tragedy: “Tragedy, then, is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of action, not of narrative; with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish its katharsis of such emotions. . . . Every Tragedy, therefore, must have six parts, which parts determine its quality—namely, Plot, Characters, Diction, Thought, Spectacle, Melody.”

OpenStudy (anonymous):

With my limited experience, tragedy is what makes a good story in general. It provides depth in the plot, helps to develop characters, evokes emotion...

I know. I was hoping we could chat about it. I have a Literature textbook I'm gong through, but it's very difficult not having any studty partners.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't mind bouncing ideas, but I'm a 1st year engineering student. Hopefully more like minded peeps will join in for you to connect with.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Engineering! Like George Costanza used to say, "I always wanted to pretend I was an Engineer."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Have you seen any of Lewin's lectures?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have 5 years of math to look forward to lol, the engineering courses will only take 3 years. Sorry I haven't seen any of his lectures, I assume they are on line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

MIT. They're excellent!! Also good are Yale's OCW lectures. I like the Physics professor.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

104 credits to finish an AS, 60 more for the BS. I will have to look him up and book mark it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Need a study partner for the Physics class?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

AT MIT, they make you take Biology and Chemistry, also.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not taking physics until next year, I need to clear calc 1 first. But if we are still connected at that time sure enough.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How far are into Calculus I?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm taking chemistry now, the only class I'm struggling in. My lecture and lab professors are doing things in different orders so I end up being tested on stuff I haven't studied yet.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm in precalc this semester, calc 1 in spring

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the best strategy to take--if you are able to--is to study a subject before you take a course, just in case they do something l;ike that to you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1st physics class can be taken concurrent with calc 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What textbook are you working from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Next level of chemistry I will make sure I have the same instructor for both.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have the physics book that Lewin recommends, "UNiversity Physics" and Sullivan's Algebra abd trig.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wiley Custom Learning for lecture, Hayden/McNiel for lab.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I skipped Algebra, I took intro algebra years ago, taught myself what I needed in the mean time, going back to school late in life and my placements put me past algebra and geometry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://opencoursescholar.wordpress.com/ Check out my blog. The video instruction for CA and Calc are extremely comprehensive and there are free textbooks. Those along with Yale OCW and MIT OCW ought to be of tremendous help to you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just bookmarked it. Thank you I will check it out on Friday. Tomorrow I have classes all day, It's getting late tonight, about to turn in.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. So long.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Keep in touch, see you Donald.
