What is the difference between speed and velocity?

OpenStudy (austinl):

Speed is how fast you are going. Velocity has a direction, it is a vector. I am going 60 miles per hour ---> Speed I am going 60 miles per hour North ---> Velocity Make sense?

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

Thus speed is a scalar quantity. Scalar quantities have magnitudes but NO directions.
