I GIVE MEDALS 3 (x - 2) > 4 (2x + 11_ A. t > -10 B. t > 1.8 C. t < -10 D. t < 1.8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it becomes 3x-6> 8x+22 right? put all x's on one side and others on other side. btw are answers in terms of x, if not what is t?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is B? @justicehunter

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

no its not B... is the question (1) 3(x - 2) > 4(2x +1) or (2) 3(x -2) > 4(2x + 11)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but how do I solve it? @campbell_st @justicehunter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ups my bad it gotta be 3x-6>8x+44 when you put all the x's in one side you should get something ike 5x<.... can you find ...?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well there is an error in the inital expansion shown

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im pretty sure the answer is A is that right? @ justicehunter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@justicehunter ^

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok..here is a simple point... the question contains x and the answers contain t... the process is the same as solving equations... 3x - 6 > 8x + 44 add 6 to both sides of the inequality... what do you get...?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

Its not A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to see if you are correct put something bigger than -10 like 0. does that make the inequality correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3x > 8x + 50 @campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

its not -3x its just 3x so 3x > 8x + 50 now subtract 8x from both sides of the inequality...what do you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

campbell is a better teacher than me, gotta admit :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-5x > 50 @campbell_st

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you're good too! @justicehunter

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

great, do you know the inequality rule for dividing by a negative..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no @campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

if you divide by the negative coefficient of x you need to reverse the inequality so you need to divide both sides of the inequality by -5 and reverse the inequality what do you get..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

t > -10 @campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

reverse the direction of the inequality

OpenStudy (anonymous):

t < -10 @campbell_st

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks so much for your help! @campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

great pick a number less that -10.. say x = -12 now substitute to check 2(-12 -2) > 4(2(-12) + 11) -24 > 4(-13) so is -24 > -52 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes! @campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so now you know your answer is correct... without guessing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks so much! :) you saved me @campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

glad to help
