Uhmm anyone good in trig?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

trigonometry is a vast subject what's ur grade in school or college or...

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

\[\Large 4\cos^2x-4\cos x+1=0\]

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Familiar with solving quadratic equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay.. No because I just got moved into trig and my teacher's out for the week sp I'm clueless...

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Quadratic equations... they have nothing to do with trig.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I somewhat kno about them but not a whole lot..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like here's what I would've started out with.. The equation is 4cos^2x-4cosx+1=0.. So I'd factor it into (4cosx+1)(4cosx-1).. Am I right?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Okay, I get the factoring part, but you factored it incorrectly ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I'm not so good in factoring either.. Then how would I factor it?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

I don't know how to teach factoring...(a shame on my part) So just accept that it's (2cosx - 1)^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So then where do I go from there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would I just divide by 2?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

No... this is equal to zero...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay.. So the problem I'd have left is (2cosx-1)^2=0.. But how do I finish tht?
