♦MEDALS AND FANNING INCLUDED IF YOU HELP♦ There are 2 main factors affecting periodic trends – nuclear charge effect or effective nuclear charge (ENC) and the shielding effect. Use your understanding of these effects to explain the trends in groups and periods for 3 different elements in terms of: a) atomic radii, b) ionization energy, c) reactivity (metals and nonmetals – separate), and d) electronegativity.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry I don't know how to explain the other 3, but hopefully this helps. :D b) Due to the fact that shielding "shields" electrons from the positive charge on the nucleus, outer electrons do not experience a strong attraction to the nucleus and are therefore, harder to remove. (Ionization energy basically means how easily are electrons removed)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ENC increases in a period and remains constant in a group,SE increases both in a period and a group.Since,we include SE in calculating ENC(ENC=NC-SE),we need not consider SE in explaining periodic properties. But to explain some exceptions in transitional and inner transitional elements,we take SE into account.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in period as ENC increases(i.e the force of attraction of nucleus over outer electrons increases) atomic size decreases in group since ENC is constant,it doesn't affect the size the size increases along group as the new shells add one after other as we go down.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

general trend ionisation energy behaves inverse to atomic size.IE depends on many factors like electronic configuration, sub shells,ENCetc.. so its very complicated. generally as ENC increases it is difficult to remove electron from atom.so IE increases As SE increases the attraction of nucleus over outer electrons decreases and we can remove them very easily.i.e the IE decreases

OpenStudy (anonymous):

electro negativity is ability to attract shared pair of electrons.as ENC increases it attracts electrons well so EN increases in period. in a group we take atomic size to explain. as size increases but ENC remains constant, the attraction decreases as we go down. so,EN decreases

Is this explanation enough. reply me if you cant get my points.i'll try to improve myself in future.
