I don't understand ratios!!! Can someone explain how they work. Just give an example problem!!!!!

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

A classroom of 12 boys and 10 girls... a 12:10 ratio.

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Or a student to teacher ratio of 19:1

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Ratios compare amounts... number of teachers vs students... number of boys vs girls

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

@readzalot13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right..I get that...but how do i solve one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Using the ":" to separate the values: 3 : 1 Instead of the ":" you can use the word "to": 3 to 1 Or write it like a fraction: 3 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you solve them by proportions...

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Let's make a pretend question, and we'll solve it together! The local pet store has 13 dogs, along with 15 cats. What is the ratio of dogs to cats?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13 to 15

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Great!!! Wanna try a harder one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha. sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm can someone help with my question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what was your question?

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

okay then :D this is a tricky one! There are 24 girls in a class. 12 have brown hair, and 6 have red black hair, while the rest have red hair. What is the ratio of brown hair to red hair?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Compassionate

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

@blue_eyedblondie I'll help you after I'm done with read :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PixieDust: PUHHH----LEASE! 12:6 Because 12+12=24. 6 have black hair so the oher half of the 6 is the red hair. So its 12:6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@blue_eyedblondie I will help you with yours in a minute

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

AWESOME!! :D Your AMAZING at this! Lol I'm giving you a badge :D

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

You seem to understand this fine :D Was there a question in particular you needed help with?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YAY!!!! Actually there was...but i got it now. Thanks!

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):
