Which of the following pairs does not share the same empirical formula? (3 points) C2H6 and C4H12 C3H6O3 and C2H4O2 C3H8O and CH2O C2H8 and CH4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The empirical formula of a compound is found by reducing its coefficients as much as possible without changing their ratios. For example:\[H_{4}O_{2} -->H_{2}O_{1}\]Try doing that to the four answer choices. One should come out with a different ratio when you're done.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it the third one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup! The ratio for the first compound is 3:8:1, whilst the second has a ratio of 1:2:1. These are different, meaning that their empirical formulas don't match up.

Could you help me with this one too? Question: Use complete sentences to explain how you determined the mass of oxygen in the compound produced in the virtual lab, and how the mass of each element can be used to determine the empirical formula of the compound.
