\[\sqrt{n-3}+4=2\]
hartnn (hartnn):
subtract 4 from both sides first, what do u get ?
OpenStudy (fanduekisses):
I got n=7, but when I plug it in, I get 6
OpenStudy (anonymous):
there is something special here your not seeing
hartnn (hartnn):
yes, you got n =7 correctly, but

can a value of square root be negative ?
OpenStudy (fanduekisses):
no
hartnn (hartnn):
so, you have
\(\sqrt{n-3}=-2\)
is that even possible ?
OpenStudy (fanduekisses):
oh no, so no solution?
hartnn (hartnn):
correct! :)

Yay, thanks so much ;D
hartnn (hartnn):
welcome ^_^
OpenStudy (fanduekisses):
\[\sqrt{x+6}=\sqrt{3x-8}\] On this one I just square both and combine like terms right?
hartnn (hartnn):
yes!
hartnn (hartnn):
and in this too, you need to verify whather the 'x' value you get is actually the solution or not.

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):
no solution because I get x=-0.5
hartnn (hartnn):
how ?
OpenStudy (fanduekisses):
I combiined like terms, x+6=3x-8 x+3x=4x 6-8=-2
OpenStudy (fanduekisses):
-2 divided by 4 = -0.5
hartnn (hartnn):
not like that

hartnn (hartnn):
to combine terms, they should be on same side of =
x+6 = 3x-8
subtract x from both sides
OpenStudy (fanduekisses):
Ohh right, ok;)
OpenStudy (fanduekisses):
so it is x=7
OpenStudy (fanduekisses):
Thanks ;D
hartnn (hartnn):
yes!
