How does the law of multiple proportions and definite proportions influence a compound's formula

So I'm learning this stuff right now so I'm probably not giving the best answer, but basically, the law of definite proportions states that every element in a compound has a mass % that is true for all compounds. So in a compound's formula such as H2O, if you had the mass of water and the mass of hydrogen , you could calculate the percentage of hydrogen in H2O and apply this to other H2O compounds to figure out mass of hydrogen. The law of multiple proportions says that for any compounds, the mass ratios of the elements will be small whole numbers. In CO2, mass oxygen/ mass carbon =2. In CO, your mass oxygen/mass carbon =1. Thus if you have masses of elements, you can figure out the compound formed by them. Hope this helped, if I said anything wrong maybe someone can correct me.
