OpenStudy (aaronq):

what do you mean a positive or negative test?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Iron( III) Chloride test is a common reagent used to test for the phenolic hydroxy group. Only phenolic -OH groups will give a positive reaction. We tested salicylic acid, synthesized aspirin, commercial aspirin and very old aspirin by adding 1ml Ethanol and 1 drop of 1% Iron( III) Chloride to each tube

OpenStudy (aaronq):

phenol has an aromatic ring, only one of those substances is aromatic

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks... i was confused b/c they both had an OH attached

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yep, one is not conjugated, the other is.
