The measures of the angles of a triangle are represented by x+26, 3x-7 and 8x-7. What is the measure of the largest angle of this triangle? WORK MUST BE SHOWN IF ANY

OpenStudy (mathmale):

What is the sum of all three interior angles of a triangle? Add together the three angles given as functions of x. This sum must equal the sum of the three interior angles of a triangle. Once you have that equation, the solution should be relatively easy. Please try it.

Do add all the numbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So not do

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Do you have a trig textbook available? Practically any such text would give you the sum of the three angles of any triangle. Hint: The sum of the four interior angles of a square is 360 degrees. Add the three unknown interior angles together as shown here: x + 26 + 3x - 7 + 8x - 7. You'll get an expression in x. Equate this expression to the sum of the interior angle of any triangle. Solve the resulting equation for x.

I'm doing geometry

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You should be able to find the same info from a geometry textbook.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay but I just write x + 26 + 3x - 7 + 8x - 7. and then solve for x?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You're on the right track here, but that alone is insufficient. Please find out what the sum of the interior angles of any triangle is. (If you need help with that, perhaps I could give you some pointers.) So, yes, you add up those three angles that you've just written out. Follow that with an "=" sign, and follow that with the sum of the interior angles of any triangle (a numeric value).

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'd suggest you do a Google search for "sum of interior angles of a triangle."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would it = 180?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or 360?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Right you are. Now create the necessary equation (with 180 on the right side) and solve it for x.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Please don't guess. If you're not sure, do an Internet search, or look in your textbook.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I think you know what I meant. First you asked whether that sum was 180 degrees; then you asked whether it was 360.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Do a Google search for "sum of interior angles of a triangle" and see where that takes you.
