S=Sin C=Cosine T=Tangent S=o/h C=a/h T=o/a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I tell which one is opposite or which one is adjacent?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

opposite side to an angle, is ALWAYS the side that's facing off the angle

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

adjacent, can be either of the other 2

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Choose one of the acute angles within a triangle. The side next to the angle is the adjacent side; the side opposite the angle is, obviously, the opposite side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jdoe, can you draw an example?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

OpenStudy (mathmale):

This is helpful. However, we're discussing RIGHT ANGLE trigonometry here, whereas none of the drawings above have a right angle. Please draw one right angle (i. e., a triangle with one 90 degree angle) and then illustrate opposite and adjacent side.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hehe... well, true... though the definition of opposite side, applies to any triangle so the same goes for a right triangle

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, true. Draw (or imagine) a right triangle. Choose one of the other angles as reference point. Then identify the sides that are (1) opposite to and (2) adjacent to this angle.
