The method for calculating the oblique asymptote is to use polynomial long division. It's not hard. It's almost like regular long division. When you divide (x^2-4x+8) by (x+2) you get x-6 and a remainder of 20/(x+2). So the equation of the oblique asymptote is y = x-6. The website purplemath.com explains it.
