Determine whether the given equation defines y as a function of x. x=|18y|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

attempt the veritcle line test

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u have a graphing calculator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I don't have a graphing calculator. It's a yes or no answer and I just need to know how to find it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

graph y = x/18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when u graph it and if it passes the verticle line test it will work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yah but she wants to know how...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y is not a function as there are two y-value for some values of "x".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what math r u in?????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. And how would you graph it? y=x/18?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

algebra

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well since u dont have a calculator for graphing like u should...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

draw a graph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I cant use a graphing calculator on the final coming up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plug in points into the function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

connect the dots

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then there must be a way of doing it some other way I guess, this is the only way I know how to do it, but this is easy enough to graph by hand...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, so how would I graph it. In the problem I only have 1 number which is the 18. I'm a noob, sorry for all the questions. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would work the two lines mean absulut value so the answer is always positive but you have two difrent solutions. no matter what you plug in it will always be positive therfor failing the rule that X can have only one solution
