OpenStudy (rane):

Ammonia and methane are both covalent molecular substances but have very different solubilities in water. explain y is this?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

solubilities of any compounds depends on what factor ? do you know ?

OpenStudy (rane):

temperature, types of solute and solvent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

think about the difference in the three-dimensional molecular structure of methane and ammonia.

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yaaa more than that anything else ? i want interns of bonding ? do you know like dissolves like and mean polar compound dissolve in polar solvent :) now can u check out of which one is polar and which is not ?

OpenStudy (rane):

i don't get it

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

u know dipole moment ?

OpenStudy (rane):

yh

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

can u draw structure of methane and ammonia

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

this dipole moment creates polarity in a molecule :) higher the dipole moment higher the polarity:) so its rule that :) polar compound dissolves in polar solvents:) mean compound with higher dipole moment dissolves in compound of higher dipole moment
