This is the Mathematics section, please post this in the appropriate section from now on. It's against the Code of Conduct that OpenStudy follows, but just to get this question out of your way.. The balance scale measures mass because, after much engineering and careful design, it is just that, a balance. Take a 50gram object and weigh it on earth, you move the balance weights around and get 50g. Take the same object to the moon and do the same thing. It still weighs 50g. Why? Because the BALANCE does not depend on the force of gravity, it simply depends on the comparison between the two sides or the BALANCE. Gravity, any gravity is still pulling down on both sides with the same force no matter where you are. The one side is your unknown and the other is, like I said, carefully engineered to give the correct result. Hope this has helped you.
