The introduction to almost anything non-fiction is more or less a roadmap for what you are about to read. In fact, when I was in college learning to write thesis papers, a couple of instructors even called part of the introduction, "The Roadmap". As they put it, the three parts of the introduction are: 1. The Attention Getter 2. The Roadmap 3. Thesis Statement The Roadmap is where you tell your reader what they are about to read. It is somewhat like a summary of the main points that will be discussed in the paper. For thesis papers The Roadmap should be very brief, maybe a sentence or two per subtopic of the paper. However, for longer works such as books, dissertations, and some technical works, a more elaborate or detailed roadmap is called for. Regardless of length though, the introduction is to introduce the reader to what they are about to read.
