Oddities in the English language? I have two phrases, 'in a way' and 'in a sense'. I want to know the actually meaning of these phrases and the placement in everyday situation any ideas? Could it be that they rely on the noun, the phrases are also a type of conversational hedges, which infers that both phrases have at least one semantic dimension. How would we use them in a sentence?

In a way, each softens what might otherwise be an overly strong sentence. In a sense, they serve as "somewhat" does, hedging a bit.
