Read each Complex Sentences. Underline the dependent clause. 1. Because she was constantly late for work. Alice was fired firm her job.

Alice was fired from her job. Sorry!!!

Just think about it! Dependent means it relies on something and usually cannot stand alone. So, for sentence structure identify the 2 parts of the sentence and identify the dependent and independent clause, if there is one. For your sentece it has two parts. The first part 'Because she was constantly late for work' the 2nd part was 'Alice was fired from her job.' Look at the sentences and decide which can stand alone? Which cannot? in this case the first part of your sentece is the dependent clause. :) For future reference, a dependent clause usually starts with because, when, if …etc :) Hope that helps.

Is it She and late

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well no. A dependent clause is a group of words that contain a verb and a subject, so technically a sentence. In this case the dependent clause is " Because she was late for work." Is that what your looking for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So late and work are the answer !!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well the whole first part of the sentence should be the answer…Is it multiple choice? If so list the answers and I will tell you which I think it is…

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks and no its not BUt got one more for u

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Rico gets the hiccups whenever he eats spicy food.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so I don't want to tell you the answer right away, but I will help you work through it! Just so you know what I am talkin about! Can you identify the two parts of the sentence? (hint: I part will be independent and one will be dependent)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

rico hiccups

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay nice try, but the two parts put together will make the sentence. For example the first part is 'Rico gets the hiccups' This by itself is a sentence and can stand alone. 'whenever he eats spicy food' is technically a sentence, but the word whenever shows that it should be attached to another sentence to make sense. Now can you tell me which is independent and which is dependent? For a hint: A dependent clause can NOT stand alone.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so underline whenever

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, the word whatever is what indicates that that part of the sentece is the dependent clause. The dependent clause is 'whenever he eats spicy food' so thats what you need to underline! If you practice you will get better! :)

What grade are you in? Just curious :)
