Suppose you found an igneous rock that had almost even amounts of silica, iron, and magnesium. How would you classify this rock? Why?

OpenStudy (seaturtle113):

An igneous rock composed of "almost even amounts of silica, iron and magnesium" would, by definition, contain 33.3% SiO2, 33.3% Fe, and 33.3% Mg. The only thing that is important from a classification standpoint here is the unusually low SiO2 concentration. Plutonic rocks with less than 45% SiO2 are called ultramafic, such as peridotite.
