Picture Attached. I don't understand this type of graph.. but I need to. Could someone explain it to me??
Like what is the significance of x=4 and y=3??
Parallelagraph ?
I have no idea what its called, haha.
Also what do you mean by significance?
It is an asymptote
Ok, the graph is a type of rational function. There are two types, direct and inverse variation. The one in your picture is an inverse equation.
something like y = k/(x-4) + 3, you're given a point. Use it to find k
Inverse. Alright, how do I use the x=4 and y=3 to solve for the equation?
An asymptote is a line e.g. x = 4 or y = 3. The graph wil NEVER touch a point along that line.
Ohhh okay!!
I don't want the answer, but how would I use the asymptote to find the equation?
asn: y = 2/(x-4) + 3
Oh, and I plug it in??
You use the general formula for rational functions. Do you know it?
No sir!
Oh I just realized xxferrocixx gave the answer lol. How do you come to that though??
You will find this really helpful:
you just have to know the general shape of some basic rational function, like 1/x, 1/x^2
Ohh okay!! That make sense, its like other graphs lol. Thank you guys!! :) I can only give one medal. :/
If I give one of y'all a medal will you give a medal to the other one??
Ok, to summarize: 1) Find the asymptotes using the graph 2) Plug in asymptotes to general formula
Thank you very much!! Helped a ton. :)
