For a particular chemical reaction, the absorbed energy is 800 kj to break old bonds, and 400 kj is released on forming new bonds. Calculate Erxn and comment on whether this reaction is exothermic or endothermic.?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Wouldn't it just be the difference? And if it is exothermic, the released energy is more than absorbed. For endothermic it is vice versa. That is what I remember.

I have no idea im barely understanding any of it

Maybe this will help: http://www.science.uwaterloo.ca/~cchieh/cact/c120/heatreac.html

thanks

The reaction is endothermic-the energy released to form new bonds in a product is less than the energy taken in to break the product |dw:1387205449033:dw|
