Philosophy of Science Paper 3 Fall 2013 Target Length: 2400-2500 words. Due Date: Friday, December 13th, by 5PM. Please turn in your paper via Blackboard. Topic: In Chapter 1 of Science, Truth, and Democracy, Kitcher presents us with two images of science. Kitcher thinks neither of these images is acceptable, but he also thinks each contains elements that can be used in crafting a more adequate vision (p. 4). What are the two images? Why does he think neither of them is acceptable? What are some of the elements he uses to craft a more adequate vision (make sure to include elements from each image)? For your second paper, you were asked to draw on the first six chapters of the book (and our class discussions of those chapters) to inform your answers to these questions. For your third paper, you are asked to incorporate themes/issues/arguments from the second half of the book (and our class discussions of those chapters). Note: You are not being asked simply to “tack on” a discussion to the end of your second paper. Incorporating the second half of the book will require you to not only amend the thesis of the second paper (to account for the issues introduced in the second half of the book), but it will also require you to be selective when it comes to which material from the second paper ends up in the third paper (e.g., reducing the number of topics discussed). Finally, your third paper should reflect the feedback I give you on your second paper (if you decide to meet with me; note that if you don’t meet with me, weaknesses in your second paper are more likely to carry over to the third paper!).
