In the cells of an organism, the synthesis of biological molecules involves chemical reactions that have a positive change in free energy. Which of the following best explains the impact of this change in free energy?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It allows spontaneous reactions to occur. It causes a decrease in entropy. It causes the cell to give off heat. It moves the cell toward equilibrium.

@wolfe8 please help

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

I have no idea :? I haven't done this level of biology, or I have forgotten it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just did this it's c can I have a medal I need them

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Chemical reactions that have a positive change in free energy \(\Delta G=+ve\) \(\color{red}{absorb}\) heat, and the products are of higher energy than the reactants. I've illustrated the process in this graph: |dw:1387503709788:dw| From \(\Delta G = \Delta H - T\Delta S\), you can infer that a positive energy change can only occur in several ways. A decrease in entropy, \(\Delta S=-ve\), causes the product of the temperature and the entropy change to be positive \((-T(-ve)=+ve)\), favouring the resultant positive energy change. In physical terms, a synthesis reaction combines different molecules into one, decreasing the number of molecules (a decrease in the entropy of the system).

OpenStudy (aaronq):

TL;DR It causes a decrease in entropy. Although more accurately, the decrease in entropy CAUSES the positive free energy change.

@Heatherisawesome you need to explain when giving direct answers, or provide sources. Do not ask for medals, people will give them on their own free will
