The pagan Germans, Greeks, and other ancient peoples believed that fame and glory are the only things that survive a person’s death. What elements in Beowulf show the value of a person's fame and reputation for the Anglo-Saxon society?

OpenStudy (wach):

Okay, well what do you know about Beowulf that shows that power is important? Let's think about the characters and what the main problem in the book is.

OpenStudy (wach):

For one, when Unferth challenges Beowulf's reputation, he doesn't step down and then fights the monster Grendel unarmed - putting his reputation and fame before his safety. What else can you think of?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

his old age proves that he is a wise and is a a good ruler and portrays himslef to be the strongest warrior

OpenStudy (wach):

Yeah, that's also correct. And he goes to fight the dragon even though he's old which shows he values his reputation/ :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes and that he also cares about the people in his kindon ?

OpenStudy (wach):

Yes, but if you say that your teacher may want to you to have a specific event that supports that idea, but yes also applicable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok well thank you :)

OpenStudy (wach):

OpenStudy (anonymous):
