Unlike matter, energy is not cycled through an ecosystem:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

true or false?

OpenStudy (confusionist):

Energy does not cycle through a system but instead enters ecosystems and is used up within them. Hence why we have the Food Chain and not the Food Cycle.

OpenStudy (blues):

Energy is a subtle concept. I would argue that energy does travel cyclically through the ecosystem - in as much as energy is stored in chemical bonds in molecules, and those molecules are transferred from one organism to the next in a cyclic manner.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Reality is kind of half-way in-between. Any energy that interacts with a system is irreversibly degraded, at least in part, to a lower form of energy, eventually ending up as useless background heat. As such, energy can at best "spiral" through a system, always eventually heading down and out. It cannot perpetually cycle within the system. I would say this makes the best answer to the question "true", but that's "true with qualifications".
