How can you tell if a system is independent, dependent, or inconsistent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Get both the equations in standard form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So they're the same, this doesn't help me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if theyre the same it meas its a dependent system

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't even know what independent and dependent mean in this situation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is two different lines with a unique solution, its independent, meaning theres an independent solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of the lines are parallel, there is no solution, so its inconsistent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is the same line, though. Is that dependent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. because the two points are dependent on each other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So crossing once is independent, not crossing is inconsistent, meeting up in more than one place is dependent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bingo
