Two cars are travelling at speeds of 60 km/hr and 75 km/hr. The second car is 3 km behind the first. How long will it take the 2nd car to overtake the first?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here i think we will use Distance = Rate times Time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the second car has rate 75 and so its distance will be \(75t\) the first car has rate 60 and a 3km head start, so its distance is \(60t+3\) when they meet the distances are the same, so you can solve by setting \[75t=60t+3\] and solve the equation for \(t\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you good from there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. so t = 1/5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is what i get, yes one fifth of an hour, aka twelve minutes

@satellite73 Thank you!
