Representative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How does this person assist with passing laws? How does this person prevent a law from being passed? What role does this person have in the lawmaking process?

1. A representative is the person who starts the making of the laws, which requires a sponsored bill. This bill must then be studied and passed by the committee. If the committee passes the bill then that bill has to be voted on. After that the bill has to also be passed by the Senate to become law. 2. Well, there isn't a lot a Representative can do on his or her own. The filibuster is not possible in the House like in the Senate, and there are over 500 Reps. so one is fairly powerless. Really, all a House Representative can do is debate an issue (trying to convince others) and vote. 3. Representatives write and vote on bills, as do senators. The bills are then sent to the president to sign into law.
