This semester you read several memoirs, including pieces by Ernesto Galarza and Russell Baker. Return to “Barrio Boy” and “No Gumption” now. How are these two memoirs similar? How are they different? In what ways are the authors’ choices and depictions related to the subject matter of their stories?

I have read both memoirs, but early in the semester. Now I am having a hard time remembering. Here is what I have so far. Please provide ideas.

The memoirs are similar in a few ways. They are both written in first person, they share conflicts, and even have some of the same values. The characters lived in close time periods (both lived in 20th century) and were very poor. They went through a lot of struggle but in the end they achieved a lot. Both of these memoirs talk about being young children.

But Like any memoir there are differences. In this case No Gumption was about a boy whose mother wanted him to have gumption. She didn’t want him to be like his father. Barrio boy though never speaks of this youth getting a job. Instead it is about an immigrant youth going to school and learning English.

Im still stuck on the last part though.

The authors choices relate directly to the subject matter of the material. For example, both authors use 1st person. This is reflected in the story and changes the way the story feels.
We get a more detailed view of the events and how they took place. But we don’t get an impartial 3rd party view.
